Therapy that feels like home

STEPS Communication therapist conducting a virtual speech therapy session online in Markham Ontario Speech language therapy session with a child using communication toys in Richmond Hill Ontario Communication Disorders Assistant working with an adult patient on speech recovery after brain injury
Sound familiar?

Finding speech support shouldn't feel this hard.

Months on a waitlist — your child isn't getting younger while you wait.

No pricing anywhere — you have to call just to find out what it costs.

Clinical language that doesn't help — "delayed," "deficit," "disorder." You want to know what to do next.

Nothing to take home — no notes, no guidance on what to practice until next week.

We move quickly. We connect families with support as soon as possible — and if we can't, we'll help you find someone who can.

Prices are right here. No surprises. Starting from $80/session for virtual CDA sessions.

Strengths-first language. No "normal," "behind," or "delayed." Every communicator has strengths. We build on them.

A handout after every session — practical activities to continue at home, plus a brief update on what we worked on.

Free communication screening

Is speech therapy the right next step?

Answer a few short questions. We'll give you an honest picture of what we're seeing and whether professional support would help. Takes about 2 minutes.

Step 1 of 7
Step 1 — About the person
Who are you completing this screening for?
This helps us tailor the questions to the right developmental stage and concerns.
👶My child — under 2 years
🧒My child — 2 to 5 years
🎒My child — 6 to 12 years
🧑My teenager (13–17)
🧑‍💼Myself — adult
👴A family member — adult or senior
Step 2 — Main concern
What is the primary communication concern?
Select the one that feels most urgent right now — you can mention others at the end.
🗣️Speech sounds — hard to understand, unclear speech
💬Language — limited words, sentences, or understanding
🔄Fluency — stuttering, repeating sounds or words
📖Literacy — reading, writing, or spelling difficulties
🎙️Voice — hoarse, weak, strained, or changed voice
🧠Brain injury / stroke — communication changes after injury
🤝Social communication — conversations, social cues, autism
Not sure — I just know something feels off
Step 3 — Duration
How long have you been noticing this concern?
Duration helps us understand whether this is a new change or an ongoing pattern.
📅Less than a few weeks — it's quite new
📆1 to 6 months
🗓️More than 6 months
As long as I can remember
It came on suddenly — after an illness, injury, or event
Step 4 — Daily impact
How is this affecting daily life?
Select all that apply — this helps us understand the full picture.
Causes frustration or upset
Affects friendships or socializing
Affects school or learning
Affects family communication
Affects work or professional life
Reduces confidence or self-esteem
Leads to avoiding talking
Minimal impact so far
Step 5 — Previous support
Has there been any previous assessment or therapy for this?
This helps us understand where you are in the journey — whether this is a first step or a continuation.
🆕No — this would be the first time seeking support
📋Yes — assessed before but no therapy yet
Yes — had therapy before, looking to continue or restart
Currently on a waitlist somewhere
🤷Was told to "wait and see"
Step 6 — Your goals
What would meaningful progress look like to you?
There are no wrong answers. This helps us understand what success means for your family.
Be understood by others
Speak with more confidence
Improve reading & writing
Speak more fluently
Connect better with others
Recover communication after injury
Just understand what's going on
Tools to help at home
Step 7 — Anything else
Is there anything else you'd like us to know before we reach out?
Optional — but the more context you give us, the more helpful our call will be. Any diagnoses, concerns, or questions are welcome here.

Based on what you've shared...
Important: This screening is not a clinical assessment or diagnosis. It is a general guide based on the information you provided. Only a registered Speech-Language Pathologist can formally assess communication abilities. If you have concerns, we always recommend speaking with a professional.

A free 15-minute phone consultation is the easiest next step.

About STEPS

Built on a belief that every voice matters

STEPS Communication was founded on a simple but powerful belief — that the ability to communicate is not a luxury. It is how we connect, how we learn, how we share who we are with the people we love. When that ability feels out of reach, everything else becomes harder.

We built STEPS because too many families were waiting too long, paying too much, and leaving appointments with too little. We wanted something different — care that is warm, honest, and built around the people we serve, not around a system.

Whether you are a parent watching your child work hard to find their words, or a caregiver supporting a family member after a stroke, you deserve a team that shows up — consistently, compassionately, and with genuine belief that progress is possible for everyone. Any support is better than none. We will always find a way to start.

🌿

Neurodiversity-affirming

No "normal," "behind," or "delayed." Every communicator has strengths.

💛

Family-centred

You are part of the team. Handouts and updates after every session.

🤝

Collaborative by design

CDA and SLP communicate consistently. Nothing falls through the cracks.

"What could be more powerful to support than a person's own voice — their ability to share moments, express themselves, and connect with the people they love?"

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

What is a CDA and how is that different from an SLP?
A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a regulated health professional registered with CASLPO who conducts assessments, diagnoses communication disorders, and develops therapy plans. A Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) is a trained professional who delivers therapy under SLP supervision. At STEPS, your CDA runs your sessions while your SLP oversees and guides the clinical plan — both in regular communication about your progress. This model delivers consistent, high-quality support at a more accessible price point.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No referral needed. You can contact us directly. We'll set up a free phone consult, learn about your situation, and take it from there. Some extended health plans may require a physician referral for reimbursement — check your plan booklet if that applies to you.
How quickly can we get started?
We work hard to connect families with support as quickly as possible. We'll respond to your inquiry within 1 business day. If our caseload is full, we'll be upfront about that and help point you toward other options — we won't leave you waiting without a plan.
Does insurance cover speech therapy?
Many extended health benefit plans cover speech-language pathology services. Coverage varies by plan — check your booklet or call your provider. We also work with families accessing Ontario Autism Program (OAP) and Special Services at Home (SSAH) government funding. Ask us if you think you may qualify — we're happy to help you navigate it.
Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person?
Yes — research consistently supports the effectiveness of virtual speech-language therapy for most areas of practice. Virtual sessions also have a real advantage: your child is in their own home, which is often the most natural and comfortable setting for communication. We offer both options and will help you figure out which works best.
My child was told to "just wait and see." What should I do?
This is one of the most frustrating things families hear — and one of the most common. While every child develops at their own pace, early support is consistently shown to produce better outcomes than waiting. You know your child best. A free phone consult costs nothing and gives you clarity. We'll never pressure you, but we won't tell you to wait if we think support would help.
What happens after each session?
After every session you receive a brief written update on what was worked on and a personalized practice handout with activities you can continue at home between sessions. Research shows children who practice between sessions make significantly faster progress — we build that into everything we do.
Do you work with adults and seniors?
Yes — we work with adults and seniors navigating voice concerns, stuttering, communication changes after brain injury or stroke, cognitive communication, and more. If you are a caregiver supporting a family member, we also offer coaching and practical strategies for the home environment.
